Johann Joubert, CEO
When the world pictures Africa, they imagine the Saharan Desert, stretching into an endless horizon or the undulating grasslands of the Savanna, home to majestic creatures that fill us with wonder. You don’t see Africa, you feel it, reverberating through your soul; but the face of Africa has another side. Today, Africa is rapidly establishing itself as one of the world’s growing hubs of technological development. The challenges faced by emerging economies compel innovative and critical thinking, and information technology is often a mechanism through which many of these challenges can be addressed. Amongst a growing community of innovative leaders is Converge Solutions—an ICT solutions and services provider— empowering enterprises to embrace digital transformation and reach new levels of innovation and growth.
With their head office in South Africa, Converge Solutions (a subsidiary of the Converge Group of Companies) is delivering innovative, ground-breaking technology at a remarkable rate. At the heart of the Converge ethos is a reimagined tomorrow. While the Converge Group of Companies offers a wide range of industry-specific and cross-industry solutions and services, it is their deep industry knowledge and understanding of the clients’ reality that differentiate what they do. “On the one hand, we employ technologists who are constantly challenging the status quo, and, on the other, recognised experts that hail from the industries we serve. This gives us unique insights because the teams that build our solutions include the very people whose problems we are solving or visions we are enabling. We refer to this as co-creation or co-innovation,” says Johann Joubert, CEO of Converge Solutions. Team Converge focuses their attention on a number of key industries, being banking, financial insurance, medical insurance, healthcare, and consumer products.
Combating Fraud, Waste, and Abuse in Banking and Insurance
Every bank or insurance company, as it should be, aspires to a specific vision, which differentiates them from their competitors. There are, however, three things that are universal across all these organisations: Firstly, technology plays a pivotal role in the enablement of that vision. Secondly, there will always be wilful or unintended fraud, waste, or abuse, whether through criminal intent or process inefficiencies. And lastly, these organisations generate large quantities of data, which can be used to combat and eradicate fraud, waste, or abuse.
Most banks and insurers demonstrate a commitment to financial integrity and accountability. It is in the “how” that many organisations struggle to live up to their intentions and fiduciary obligations. Fraud, waste, and abuse cannot be effectively managed without tools that can measure transactional and behavioural patterns to determine what should be investigated and why.
“Themis—Converge’s AI and machine learning powered fraud, waste, and abuse platform— improves the productivity of forensic teams by as much as ten times. Companies that are serious about eradicating fraud, waste, and abuse cannot expect teams of people to run through petabytes of data or cannot rely on systems that simply run data through rules engines, generating thousands of alerts that lack context.
Our SAP/Cerner healthcare template shifts expectations from ‘the cost of IT’ to the ‘value of business’ or if you will, ‘the value of life’
The world has moved on. While rules still have relevance, neural networks and risk-based models deliver much more valuable results, in much faster turnaround times,” describes Joubert, clearly passionate about a better way to employ technology.
Joubert goes on to explain that Themis is delivered with more than 550 typologies (as opposed to rules) and connects to more than 7000 external golden data sources. Themis is the applied and productised intellectual capital of teams of forensic experts, data scientists, mathematicians, and actuaries.
Healthcare Simplification and Sophistication
Healthcare organisations in Africa are increasingly recognising the need for digitalisation to deliver repeatable, reliable, and affordable healthcare outcomes. Converge Solutions is helping healthcare service providers improve efficiency, adopt best practices, and ensure business continuity, growth, and innovation with their healthcare solutions.
“Healthcare is about people. How well we empower them says a lot about our commitment as leaders to our employees, patients, and communities. A good foundation for a modern hospital is a reliable, fully integrated hospital information system. Our SAP/Cerner healthcare template shifts expectations from “the cost of IT” to the “value of business” or if you will, “the value of life.” At a cost comparable to a cup of coffee per employee today, we impact and enable every person in the healthcare value chain to do better. There was a time, when SAP was costly and cumbersome. SAP, coupled with the Cerner i.s.h.med clinical information system, now sets the standard in the fine balance between ease of use and sophistication, at a price-point that is truly competitive,” says Joubert. Beyond SAP/ Cerner, Converge has developed a range of healthcare offerings that help healthcare organisations of all sizes and disciplines.
“We are particularly excited about Triton, our acuitybased nurse scheduling and planning platform that has gained acceptance for its “simplistic sophistication,” states Joubert. Triton helps hospitals optimise nurse and shift planning by looking at patient acuity as a key driver for required capacity. Triton guides shift planners on the number of nurses—as well as the skill level of nurses—required for a shift. Shift planners can see the financial impact of their plans, in real-time, and allows them to use free capacity across units. “We have a suite of other healthcare offerings, which address specific challenges in the healthcare ecosystem, and we’re excited to see the market adopting these solutions at pace,” says Joubert.
Enabling Consumer Products
When speaking about LULA (the Zulu word for easy), Joubert’s eyes light up with excitement. LULA offers Consumer Products companies “a world of insight at your fingertips,” and when he describes the sophisticated ease with which LULA does this, his excitement is understood. LULA is a cloud-based reporting environment that helps companies better manage on-shelf-availability, sales and distribution gaps, negative stock, phantom stock, and much more. LULA is offered on a software-as-aservice model with no upfront implementation fees, and the environment can be fully operational in a client’s environment, in hours. One hundred percent of clients, who have participated in a “proof of concept,” have agreed to move forward commercially, having seen the immense value that LULA holds.
Pervasive, Relevant IoT
Converge Solutions does not just offer clients software solutions and services. Its suite of IoT offerings enable organisations to simplify, automate, and augment the tracking and monitoring of assets and people. “We offer the full IoT stack, from sensors to nodes to gateways to the artificial intelligence and reporting layer that brings it all together in an actionable, intelligent reporting environment,” mentions Joubert. “What makes our approach different and more valuable, is that we work through the client’s problems or ambitions with them, and then match the right solution to meet their requirements. Our experts work through the different options and craft a solution that best meets both the expected outcomes, as well as the client’s budget.”
As the world continues to grapple with an unpredictable future, Converge is taking every reasonable step to be at the frontlines of enabling an imagined, better tomorrow. “Shaping a better future is a collective responsibility. Converge is not in itself, the answer. We are a piece in the puzzle; a passionate and dedicated piece, but still, only one piece. Together, let’s be the enablers of an imagined tomorrow, through bold, passionate and deliberate convergence,” concludes Joubert.
